Neðri Bakki Icelandic Horses is an Icelandic horses stud and training centre. It is located in Pukekohe, not far from Auckland. " Neðri " refers to our position "down-under" and "Bakki" means "at the edge of a stream" in Icelandic language. Taking the name seriously, we try to be at the edge of breeding and training high-quality Icelandic horses for both breeders and riders in New Zealand.
Our breeding stock includes the first Icelandic horse ever born in New Zealand, Hrima fra Lukka, and high quality Icelandic horses imported from Denmark and Iceland. Our horses represent some of the very best bloodlines available in Europe boosting both classic breeding matadors (e.g. Hrafn fra Holtsmúla and Odur fra Brun) and current fashion (e.g. Orri frá Þúfu and Gustur fra Grund).
The stud is engaged in a diverse range of activities related to Icelandic horses, such as:
Breeding on quality mares;
Breaking-in and training horses;
Training people - adults and children - to fully enjoy their Icelandic horses;
Offering farm rides;
Occasionally organising trekking tours in the near-by forest or/and on the beach.
The Farm
Nedri Bakki Icelandic horses is located on the North Island, 40 km south of Auckland, just a few km north of Pukekohe. The farm is landscaped with ponds, gardens and a huge variety of native trees. This makes it a home to birds like Tui, wood-pigeons, ducks and pheasants.
Hilly paddocks, combined with facilities, such as a large arena, round pen and riding treks, is ideal for breeding, training and enjoying Icelandic horses. We are located close to several attractive horse riding areas, such as the famous Waiuku Forest with access to and views over the Tasman Sea and Kariotahi Beach, a beautiful place that is a favourite among horse riders in the area and where one can enjoy magnificent sun-rises while riding.
"Nedri Bakki is a beautiful, charming farm in New Zealand's countryside. It was a pure pleasure to ride in the farm paddocks and the trails through the bush. I enjoyed so much the nature and, of course, the wonderful Icelandic horses they have." Karen Woodrow
The Family
We are a Bulgarian-Danish family of five: Snejina, Kenneth and the three kids Damian, Christian and Alexia. We reallocated from Denmark to New Zealand in 2005.
Kenneth has had experience with horses in Denmark since he was a child. He has been competing, training horses and people and breaking-in horses until his professional career absorbed all his attention for a number years. The passion for Icelandics and the knowledge, skills and expertise he has accumulated over the years have resulted in the ambitious and quality-focused Nedri Bakki Icelandic Horses Stud in New Zealand.
Snejina has started riding three years ago. 9-year old Alexia is a keen rider who spends much time with the horses. She is often alone with the horses on the paddocks, something that often shocks our guests who are not familiar with the Icelandics’ calm and easy-going character.
